If you’re one of Discord’s users that are not the biggest fans of the platform’s notifications sounds, you’re probably wondering whether there is a way those Discord noises could be changed.

Although Discord doesn’t have a list of notification sounds to choose from, there are still some ways to change them– but only on Windows and Android devices.

Read on to learn how to change the Discord notification sound.

How To Change Discord Sounds on PC?

If you happen to be a Discord app and Windows user, you’re in luck; Discord notification sounds can only be changed if you’re using the desktop application for Windows.

Discord may not have a notification sound tab, but the platform is customisable just enough to allow users to edit app sounds.

There are two ways to change Discord sounds: through the app files and with Better Discord.

Through files

On Discord users can change the notification sound by editing it via the configuration files, which the app saves on the PC itself.

To change Discord sounds via the files follow these steps.

  1. Download the sounds you want to use.
  2. Press the Windows button + R on your keyboard.
  3. Type ‘%appdata%’ and click ‘OK’.
  4. Open the folder you found. On most PCs, it will be under C:/Use/Username/Appdata/Roaming.
  5. Go to the Discord app and open the Cache folder.
  6. The sound files are those with a F_prefix and no extension. To find Discord’s sound effects, you’ll need to add a .mp3 or .wav extension on each of these files and check which sound they’ll play.

Here’s a list of sounds that works for most users:

F_000031 – notification for direct messages

F_000032 – unknown

F_000033 – unknown

F_000110 – default notification

F_000112 – disconnect

F_000113 – connect

  1. To replace Discord’s sounds with the custom Discord notification sound, rename the sound file to match Discord’s.
  2. Copy the sounds you’ve downloaded and rewrite them into /Appdata/Roaming/Discord/Cache.

This should make sure that the Discord sound effects in the app are changed.

Note: Mistakes during editing can lead to crashes and other issues which may require you to delete and reinstall the app.

With Better Discord

If you don’t want to mess with the Discord app files, you can change Discord sounds by downloading Better Discord– a client mode that lets users modify the appearance and functionality of the app.

The mode, which allows for customisation by opening up room for custom plugins, comes with a steep learning curve, but if you learn your way around it, you will find it much easier to make any changes to the app.

To change Discord notification sound with Better Discord:

  1. Download and install Better Discord on your PC. You can find it here: https://betterdiscord.app. Note that once the installation process is done, Better Discord will replace the official Discord app.
  2. Run the app.
  3. Click on the Settings icon.
  4. Under Better Discord, select Plugins and open an empty Plugins folder,
  5. Download your preferred Notification Plugin from the website.
  6. Once the Plugin is downloaded, drag it into the empty Plugins folder.
  7. Go back to Discord Plugins Settings and turn on the Notification Sound option.
