If you want a VPN that will provide security and speed, then Encrypt.me might be just what you’re looking for. Although it doesn’t offer access to streaming services and you can’t download torrents, the easy usage and low prices will satisfy your requirements when it comes to protection.

In this Encrypt.me review, we’ve compiled all the information you need to determine whether this VPN is right for you. So, let’s dig in!

No matter which VPN you choose, it slows your connection to some extent. Speed depends on many factors, such as your location (how close you are to the server) and your internet provider.

Still, Encrypt.me has shown outstanding results when it comes to speed. According to most speed tests conducted from different locations and servers, Encrypt.me doesn’t disappoint. We ran our tests from our London office on a 200Mbps connection.

When connected to a nearby UK server, the download speed was excellent—180Mbps. When connected to a US server, the download speed was more than sufficient, too—155Mbps. However, when connected to a Japanese server, the speed dropped considerably to 40Mbps. In Brazil and Cyprus, the speed loss was workable but not phenomenal. The connection through the Brazilian server dropped to 65Mbps, and the Cyprus one clocked in at 120Mbps.

Overall, Encrypt.me’s performance was better than most providers but still slower than some, such as ExpressVPN.

Security and Privacy

Encrypt.me offers top-notch security features. Let’s explore them in detail.

Encrypt.me uses “military-grade” 256-bit AES encryption on all of its applications.

Also, this provider uses OpenVPN (TCP/UDP) on Mac and Android devices and IKEv2/IPsec VPN protocols on iOS and Windows devices.

The OpenVPN provides secure tunnels for your web traffic, while the IKEv2 protocol automatically reestablishes the connection with your VPN after you’ve been disconnected from the net.

DNS/WebRTC Leaks

Encrypt.me uses DNS leak blocking and WebRTC leak blocking.

With Encrypt.me, you’re also protected from IP leaks, so there’s nothing to worry about when it comes to securing your internet activity.

Kill Switch

Encrypt.me doesn’t have a kill switch for Windows, but it does for Mac, iOS, and Android devices. This provider’s version of the tool is called Auto-Secure and protects all your data if the VPN connection drops. If you need a kill switch for Windows, you might want to look into alternatives, such as NordVPN.

Data Logging

Encrypt.me stores data for 16 days and then permanently deletes it. It retains information on:

  • The number of bytes sent and received
  • How long you’ve been connected
  • Your IP address and the virtual IP that it assigns to you
  • The source port of the outgoing connection with beginning and ending times

Encrypt.me is a US-based VPN, which means it falls under the laws of that country. That’s where the service falls short, as most people don’t want their privacy “invaded” because of the log retention regulations of the US.

Split Tunnelling

With the split tunnelling option, you can choose which of the apps you want to go through the VPN. At the time of writing, split tunnelling is only available on the Encrypt.me Android app.

Server and Server Locations

This VPN has 90+ servers. The Encrypt.me server locations are in 75 countries around the world. However, there’s no exact information on the number of individual IP addresses.

Compared to most other VPN providers Encrypt.me doesn’t have many servers, but the number is good enough to cover most bases.

Encrypt.me’s Primary Uses

Encrypt.me falls short when it comes to the variety of ways to use the VPN.

Unfortunately, you can’t use Encrypt.me to unblock Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, or other similar streaming services. If you need a VPN to access such a platform you might be better off with a different provider, such as Surfshark.

The inability to download torrents with Encrypt.me might be a significant disadvantage for some people.

Fortunately, when we consider the fast speeds this VPN provides, you can game online without any issues—a big plus for avid gamers.

Supported Platforms

The Encrypt.me VPN download is available on your Windows or Mac device. Also, there are apps available for Android and iOS devices. This is pretty much in line with other popular providers, such as ExpressVPN and NordVPN.

Windows and Mac Apps

Let’s check out what the Encrypt.me app does for Windows and Mac device.

It offers excellent protection when you’re connected to public Wi-Fi, building a barrier between your web traffic and the rest of the network. It also provides browser leaking protection and ISP (internet service provider) monitoring defence. Plus, the app is very easy to use. The only thing the Windows client lacks is the Auto-Secure option (which works as a kill switch).

However, Encrypt.me doesn’t have a desktop notification system, so you can’t tell whether you’re connected to the VPN or not unless you’re looking at it. Green means you’re disconnected, and blue means you’re connected (“VPN off” and “VPN on”).

Android and iOS Apps

The Android and the iOS apps are very similar—both are easy to use, offer strong protection, and have a variety of advanced options.

You can set Encrypt.me to automatically secure untrusted connections, you have a split tunnelling option and an Auto-Secure option, blocking the internet access in case the VPN connection drops. The apps also let you change protocols.

Furthermore, the mobile apps have high ratings, despite the fact that they’re not frequently updated.

Now, let’s check out the Encrypt.me pricing plans:

Weekly plan $3.99/week
Monthly plan $9.99/month
Annual plan $99.99/year

Encrypt.me offers two family plans:

Monthly family plan $12.99/month
Annual family plan/per month $149.99/year

And a teams plan:

Teams plan/per two people $7.99/per person; $15.98/month

There’s a 14-day free trial period, and you can save money using the Encrypt.me coupons that are available from time to time.

Compared to most other providers, including high-end ones like NordVPN, Encrypt.me is pricey, especially considering that it doesn’t offer features such as torrenting or unblocking streaming sites.

Customer Support

You can reach Encrypt.me only via email

The company also has a FAQ page on its website, which is divided into several categories:

  • Quick start guides
  • General
  • App-specific support
  • Billing
  • Advanced VPN users
  • Technology

Encrypt.me also has a chatbot on its website, but we found it to be barely helpful, so a live chat would be a considerable improvement.

Let’s see how people feel about the provider’s customer support.

On Trustpilot, Encrypt.me has a 4.5 out of 5 rating from almost 400 reviews, which is more than satisfactory. 62% of the customers rated it as excellent, and only 3% thought its service was bad.

Most positive comments are about the speed of the internet when the VPN is activated, the ease of use, and the excellent customer support.

Some of the complaints are related to the fact that the service doesn’t allow unblocking sites like Netflix or BBC iPlayer. If you need a VPN for streaming, check out providers such as Cyber Ghost.

We couldn’t find reviews complaining about Encrypt.me not connecting, which is a good indication that the service is reliable.

Encrypt.me Alternatives

Let’s check out some Encrypt.me VPN alternatives and see how they compare:

Encrypt.me vs NordVPN

Both VPNs offer great speed, privacy, and security. However, NordVPN doesn’t keep logs while Encrypt.me keeps logs for 16 days. Also, Encrypt.me has 90+ servers in 75 countries worldwide, whereas NordVPN has 5,400+ servers in 62 locations across 59 countries.

NordVPN unblocks sites such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Disney+ among others, and Encrypt.me doesn’t. But NordVPN is also pricier—the monthly plan costs £8.31 vs £7.28 for Encrypt.me. Last but not least, NordVPN has a 30-day free trial period, while Encrypt.me’s trial lasts 14 days.

Encrypt.me vs ExpressVPN

Both VPNs allow you to browse the net through a high-speed connection and at the same time look after your privacy and security. ExpressVPN has over 3,000 servers in 160 locations across 94 countries, while Encrypt.me has 90+ servers in 75 countries. Unlike Encrypt.me, ExpressVPN keeps no logs whatsoever, and it’s one of the best VPNs for torrenting since it allows BitTorrent traffic.

But the monthly subscription for ExpressVPN is more costly—£9.68 vs £7.28 for Encrypt.me. ExpressVPN has no trial but offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Bottom Line

Although Encrypt.me doesn’t unblock some streaming sites and doesn’t allow torrenting, it provides high speeds and protection. It’s not as pricey as other VPNs and has a good server distribution. Also, you can install it quickly, and it’s easy to use.

We hope our Encrypt.me review helped you decide if Encrypt.me is the best VPN provider for your needs.
