The question ‘What GPU does the PS5 have?’ does not have a straightforward answer since the console uses a custom-made AMD GPU based on the RDNA 2 architecture.

This GPU is part of the AMD Oberon SoC (which also includes a Zen 2 CPU), features 36 compute units (CUs), 16GB of GDDR6, and runs with a frequency of up to 2.25 GHz, ultimately achieving 10.3 TeraFLOPS of computational power.

What Is The PS5 GPU Equivalent?

Modern PC GPUs often cost more than the entire PS5 without providing a noticeable bump in visual fidelity. Below, we go over several GPUs that offer similar bang as the PS5.

AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT

The closest PS5 graphics card equivalent coming from AMD is the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which delivers 9.8 TeraFLOPS—slightly less than the real-life performance of the PS5. Moreover, it does not include any ray-tracing capabilities and is often more expensive than the PS5 (due to market inflation) even though it was released more than a year before the PS5.

Nvidia RTX 2070 Super

The RTX 2070 Super is Nvidia’s equivalent to the PS5 Oberon GPU. However, while it offers slightly less computational power (9.5 TeraFLOPS), it does include hardware-based ray tracing, unlike the 5700 XT. Like AMD’s offering, however, getting the RTX 2070 Super at prices lower than the PS5 is still unfeasible due to the global chip shortages.

AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT

The RX 6800 XT uses the same architecture and offers similar features (ray tracing) as the PS5. But why are we comparing the PS5 with a card with double the TeraFLOPS (20.74)? Well, the PS5’s efficiency and the fact that its games are optimised for it from the start means that you are getting more or less the same gaming experience as a PC with a more powerful GPU.

Nvidia RTX 3070

Nvidia’s response to the RX 6800 XT, and consequently the PS5, is the RTX 3070. With its 20.31 TeraFLOPS, it offers more or less the same power as the 6800 XT, which results in similar gaming performance. However, the RTX 3070 features second-generation ray tracing hardware, so if you find it at the same or lower price than the 6800 XT, get it instead!
