Not so long ago, the UK’s most popular social media network WhatsApp, notified every member of the group when someone leaves the chat.

Thankfully, you can now leave a WhatsApp group without notification.

But, how does this new WhatsApp feature work, and how can you exit a group without sounding the alarm?

Let’s dive in.

Can You Leave a WhatsApp Group Without Anyone Knowing?

Whether you’re looking to disassociate from a certain group in the app or just want to get away from an endlessly buzzing group, you can now leave any WhatsApp group silently.

Thanks to a recent update to WhatsApp, most members are no longer notified when someone leaves the group chat. The only person in the group that will receive a notification about your decision to tap the ‘Exit’ button is the admin of that group.

How To Exit a WhatsApp Group Without Members Knowing

Although you can silently exit a group on WhatsApp, there are some alternatives you can consider to avoid social awkwardness before you permanently leave a group in the app.

Mute group notifications

Leaving a WhatsApp group is typically a last resort to silence an active group.

If you don’t want to leave the group, but you still want to take a break from it, you can simply mute it.

Android

To disable notifications from a WhatsApp group on an Android phone or tablet:

  1. Launch the WhatsApp app.
  2. Tap the group you want to leave.
  3. Tap the three-dot icon in the top right of the screen.
  4. Select ‘Mute’ from the drop-down menu.
  5. Uncheck ‘Show Notifications’ on the next screen.
  6. You can mute group notifications for 8 hours, a week, or even a year.
  7. Tap ‘OK’.

iPhone

To turn off notifications from a WhatsApp group on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open WhatsApp on your phone.
  2. Find the WhatsApp group you want to leave and tap on it.
  3. Swipe left on the group and tap ‘More’ from the hidden menu.
  4. Select ‘Mute’.
  5. Select how long you want the chat to stay silent.

Delete the group messages

If a WhatsApp group is taking too much memory on your phone because of all the images and videos, you can delete the group–and everything else in it– without having to leave the WhatsApp group.

Android

To delete a WhatsApp group on an Android:

  1. Open the app.
  2. Find the group you want to delete.
  3. Tap the three dots at the top right corner of the screen.
  4. Select ‘More’ from the drop-down menu.
  5. Tap ‘Clear Chat’.
  6. Select ‘All Messages’ and tap ‘Clear’.

To delete a group on WhatsApp on your iPhone:

  1. Open WhatsApp on your phone.
  2. Select the group you want to delete.
  3. Swipe left on the group.
  4. Tap ‘More’.
  5. Select ‘Clear Chat’.
  6. Tap ‘Clear Chat’ in the pop-up menu.

Once you’ve completed these steps, all the messages and data associated with that particular group will be deleted.

Outright leave the group

Finally, you can simply exit a WhatsApp group without triggering a notification

To exit a WhatsApp group on an Android phone or an iPhone:

  1. Open the WhatsApp app.
  2. Tap the ‘Chats’ tab.
  3. Tap the group you want to leave.
  4. Tap the group name at the top of the screen.
  5. Scroll down on the Info page and tap ‘Exit Group’.

Bottom Line

If you’re looking to leave a WhatsApp group without notification, you can – thanks to the recent update to WhatsApp. The app won’t send a notification to everyone in the group that you’ve left, but it will notify the admin.
