WhatsApp has a file-sharing limit that does not let users share files that exceed a certain size.

However, there are ways to bypass the app’s limitations.

Here’s how to send long videos on WhatsApp on both Android and iOS phones.

How Long a Video Can You Send on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps, with more than 40 million users in the UK.

Although it has excellent features, the app has its limitations.

The current WhatsApp video size limit in 2022 is 16 MB (Megabytes), which equals around 90 seconds to 3 minutes of video.

Users can also send images and voice messages of up to 16MB and documents of up to 100MB.

How To Send Longer Videos on WhatsApp

Although there’s no way to change the WhatsApp video sending limit, there are some workarounds that will allow you to send videos on the app that exceed the limit.

Google Drive

The easiest way to send a large video on WhatsApp is through a cloud storage service like Google Drive.

In Google Drive, you can upload files in any format and then share them on WhatsApp with a Google Drive link. Once the recipient clicks on the link, it will take them to the file in Google Drive, where they can watch and download the video.

To send longer videos on WhatsApp via Google Drive:

  1. Open Google Drive.
  2. Click the ‘+’ at the bottom right corner of the screen.
  3. Tap ‘Upload’.
  4. Once the file is uploaded, click on the three dots next to the file name and select ‘Copy Link ‘.

The file link will be copied to your clipboard. You can then paste the link into your WhatsApp chat.

Files app on iPhone

iPhone users can also send videos that are over the maximum WhatsApp video size as documents via the Files app.

To do that:

  1. Open the Photo app and select the video you want to share.
  2. Select ‘Save to Files’.
  3. Save the file to ‘Downloads’.
  4. Go to the WhatsApp chat where you want to share the file.
  5. Click the Attachment icon.
  6. Select ‘Documents’.
  7. Choose the video from the Files application and tap ‘Send’.

Keep in mind that when sending long videos on WhatsApp, the file cannot exceed the 100MB limit.

As a Document on Android

Sending large videos directly on WhatsApp on an Android device is also possible if you share the video as a document.

To share a video as a document:

  1. Launch WhatsApp.
  2.  Locate and open the chat where you want to send the video.
  3. Tap the attachment icon in the chat.
  4. Select documents
  5. Tap ‘Document’ and locate the video file you wish to send.
  6. Select the video and click ‘Send’.

The video will appear in the chat as a document. The recipient will have to download it to watch the video.

We Transfer Service

Another way to share a video that exceeds the maximum video size in WhatsApp is via the We Transfer platform, which allows you to share large files of any format via a shareable link.

You can upload files up to 2GB with the free version and files of up to 20GB with a pro We Transfer account.

To share video with the help of WeTransfer:

  1. Go to the WeTransfer website.
  2. Click the ‘Upload files’ button and upload the videos you wish to send.
  3. Once the video is uploaded, click the ‘Get a link’ button.
  4. Copy the link and paste it into the WhatsApp chat.

The recipient can open the link and download the file through the WeTransfer website.

Video Compressor (Panda)

Finally, you can send a long video on WhatsApp by compressing it to a size that is under the WhatsApp size limit.

One app you can use to compress a video is the Panda Video Compressor, which is free to use.

To compress a video via the Panda Video Compressor:

  1. Go to Google Play Store or the App Store and download the video compressor.
  2. Launch the app.
  3. Select the video you want to compress and tap ‘Next’.
  4. Select from the following options: Small File, Medium File, Large File, Fit to Messenger, Fit to Email, or Custom file size.
  5. Tap ‘Compress’ at the bottom right of the screen.

Once the compressing process is completed, you’ll see the compressed video on the next page. You can then download it by clicking ‘Save’ or share it to WhatsApp directly from the app.

Bottom Line

WhatsApp has a media and file sharing size, but there are ways to send large videos on the app. If you’re wondering how to send long videos on WhatsApp, you can do that via Google Drive, a video compressor, a file transfer service, or just send it as a document from your device.
