    Tempur: Brand Snapshot

Tempur-Pedic, Inc. was founded in Lexington, Kentucky, USA. Starting in 1992, the company has been in the business for almost 30 years. In 2012 it merged with its competitor, the Sealy corporation, and became Tempur Sealy International, Inc.

The company manufactures and distributes high-quality mattresses and other sleep accessories in over 80 countries worldwide. All of its products are made with the trademark Tempur viscoelastic material.

There are currently four different mattress collections manufactured by Tempur for the UK market—Cloud, Original, Hybrid, and Sensation.

All Tempur products for the UK market are manufactured in Denmark.

    Tempur Hybrid Material & Construction

Like all other Tempur mattresses, the hybrid models are made with the Tempur material.

This is an open-celled viscoelastic foam that is fluid and spring-like at the same time. Although it was initially developed by NASA in the early 1970s to support astronauts during lift-off, it was perfected for consumer use with the addition of Tempur engineering.

The Supreme and Elite versions of the Tempur Hybrid mattress are made up of five layers, and like any other hybrid model out there, they combine an innerspring system with foam layers. Let’s take a look at each layer separately.

    • Zipped top cover—protects the inside of the Hybrid mattress. It’s composed of 99% polyester and 1% elastane.
    • The Tempur material—this is an open-cell viscoelastic comfort material that molds to the unique contours of your body, providing maximum support and pressure relief in key pressure points.
    • The Tempur Dynamic Support Technology—made from more close-grained memory foam, this layer is designed to bring additional body support and more ease of movement.
    • The Precision Micro Coils—is the innerspring layer composed of individually pocketed micro coils that provide exceptional support.
    • The Durabase Technology—is a supportive and dense polyfoam that serves as a base for all layers above.

Overall, the construction is similar to other high-end models, such as the Simba Hybrid Pro, although most Tempur Hybrids are not as deep.

There are three different types of Hybrid Tempur mattresses, and all three have different depths:

1.Tempur Hybrid Supreme—the depth of this mattress is 21cm, and it’s composed of:

    • 3cm of Tempur material
    • 5cm of Tempur Dynamic Support foam
    • 10cm of Precision Micro Coils
    • 3cm of Durabase foam

2.Tempur Hybrid Elite—the depth of this mattress is 25cm, and it’s made up of:

    • 4cm of Tempur material
    • 8cm of Tempur Dynamic Support foam
    • 10cm of Precision Micro Coils
    • 3cm of Durabase foam

3.Tempur Hybrid Luxe—the depth of this mattress is 30cm, and it’s composed of:

    • 4cm of Tempur Material
    • 3cm of Tempur Dynamic Support foam
    • Two layers of 10cm Precision Micro Coils each
    • 3cm of Durabase foam

    Tempur Hybrid Mattress Firmness

Online Tempur reviews by customers rate the Tempur Hybrid as a slightly firmer than average mattress. In terms of rating on the firmness scale, it’s 6.5 out of 10.

Although the Tempur Hybrid isn’t the softest mattress in the UK, its memory foam easily adapts to your body and provides enough softness and support at the same time. It doesn’t sag, and after you get off the bed, it quickly gets its shape back. Since this is a hybrid model and has micro coils, it offers only slight bounciness.

If you prefer bouncier beds, we suggest going for another hybrid model, such as the Eve Premium Hybrid.

    Comfort & Support

Is the Tempur mattress good for back sleepers? How about side sleepers?

The Tempur Hybrid mattress is ideal for both sides and back sleepers because it gives consistent back support and encourages proper spinal alignment. It also distributes your weight equally and aligns your body from head to toe.

What’s more, the top Tempur layer is soft enough to perfectly adapt to your body shape and relieve all the key pressure points.

However, we wouldn’t recommend this mattress to stomach sleepers. Although it falls on the firmer side of the firmness scale, it still isn’t firm enough for stomach sleepers or heavyweight people. If you tend to sleep on your belly, you might want to consider other options, like the iGel Advance 3000, which is designed to offer support to stomach sleepers.

    Temperature Regulation

Is the Tempur Hybrid mattress suitable for hot sleepers?

The Tempur memory foam is composed of billions of spherical cells that respond and adapt to your body temperature while conforming to your sleeping position. And due to the removal of pressure, it also increases your circulation and makes you feel warmer.

To decrease the warmth, the company suggests using lighter bedding or sleeping in a well ventilated room.

To answer the question above, the Tempur Hybrid mattress isn’t the best choice for hot sleepers. If sleeping cool is among your priorities, we suggest looking at a model that excels in temperature regulation, such as Dormeo Wellsleep Hybrid.

Another option is to consider the special Tempur CoolTouch models, which are exclusive to the Dreams mattress collection.

    Motion Transfer

What is excellent about Tempur mattresses is that they don’t pass on motion. We were concerned that since this mattress has a layer of micro coils, it will bounce a little too much. But we are glad that this isn’t the case. Its Tempur memory foam has an excellent motion absorption capability and doesn’t make noises when you move.

So the Hybrid Tempur King size mattress is definitely a great choice for couples since it provides true comfort by adapting to your unique shape and weight and ensures complete freedom from your partner’s tossing and turning.

    Edge Support

Keeping in mind that Hybrid Tempur mattresses have both foam and spring coils in their interior, they provide solid edge support but not much better than comparable models. Although you won’t feel like you’re falling off the bed while lying close to the side, you won’t feel as supported as when you sleep towards the middle.

This mattress is suitable for heavier people, but we wouldn’t recommend it to very heavy sleepers since the weight limit is around 150kg.

    Durability & Maintenance

According to the company, with proper care, the hybrid Tempur mattresses can last up to 15 years.

But how can you take care of your Tempur Hybrid?

There is no heavy lifting involved since all models don’t need flipping—they are constructed for sleeping on the top side only.

Additionally, all mattresses come with removable and washable covers. The Tempur Hybrid Supreme has only one zipped removable cover, while the Tempur Hybrid Elite and the Tempur Hybrid Luxe come with the QuickRefresh removable cover and another one underneath it. All the covers are machine washable at 60°C or below, and you shouldn’t iron or tumble dry them.

Under the removable tops, there is a thin layer of stocking-type material that you should not remove because it may damage your mattress.

When it comes to cleaning stains from the Tempur material, just carefully wipe it using clean water on an almost dry clean cloth. In addition, all mattresses have a label stitched inside their cover that will give you more specific care instructions.

To prevent moisture from accumulating in your Tempur mattress, you should always place it on a ventilated bed base to allow air to circulate freely. Bases with sturdy platform tops or slats work best in terms of airing and support, while spring bases may cause dips or hollows in your new mattress.

    Mattress Accessories

Tempur offers a wide range of sleeping accessories that you can purchase along with your mattress.

There’s the ultra-thin and breathable Tempur mattress protector that will keep your bed clean, fresh, and dry. The protector also wards off dust mites and is water-resistant.

You can also get Tempur mattress toppers in different sizes, so you can choose one to go with your preferred bed size.

What’s more, there are different kinds of Tempur pillows for a variety of sleeping positions and preferences.

The brand offers bedding as well, including quilts, luxury sheets, and different pillowcases.

And last but not least, there are different types of Tempur beds, such as divan, ottoman, and adjustable beds, which go perfectly with the company’s mattresses.

    Warranty & Trial Period

The warranty for the high-end Hybrid Tempur mattresses is ten years. It covers all defects caused by faulty materials or workmanship and changes that result in a noticeable indentation over 2cm in the mattress.

The trial for the mattress is 100 nights, but you will have to keep the bed for a minimum of 60 nights to adapt to its unique feel. This period is in line with most rivals on the market, although it’s not as long as that of Emma mattresses (200 nights).

If during the trial period, you decide that the Tempur Hybrid isn’t the right mattress for you, you can easily return it by filling in a form on the official UK website. The returns are free only for mainland UK orders.

    Mattress Delivery

Tempur offers free home delivery for all orders in the UK mainland. The shipping usually takes 14 to 25 business days for all standard UK size mattresses already in supply. Beds with special sizes or custom-made products such as small double, long double, or others can take longer to deliver.

The Tempur Hybrid mattress is shipped flat in a full-size box, and when you get it, you won’t need to wait for the mattress to inflate. It’s ready for sleeping from day one. And if you want to, the Tempur delivery service will set up your bed free of charge.

Several Tempur reviews from customers in the UK say they have noticed some off-gassing. Luckily, the odor dissipates in a couple of days. To speed up this process, just leave the mattress uncovered in a ventilated area. It’s important to mention that this smell is leftover from the manufacturing process and isn’t harmful.

    Sizes & Pricing

We have to admit that the products from this manufacturer are high-end and therefore a bit pricier than most competitors, including premium offers like the Dormeo Octasmart Plus. The Hybrid Tempur bed price depends on its type and size. Interestingly, besides the standard sizes, Tempur also offers special sizes of its mattresses.

How do Tempur UK customers rate these mattresses?

On Trustpilot, the brand has a 3.9/5 score out of over 800 Tempur reviews. 51% rated it as excellent, while 32% gave it a bad score. Customers who gave it a 5-star rating used words like comfortable, wonderful, and perfect to describe the mattresses.

Tempur is the only mattress company awarded with the ‘Certified Technology Seal’ from the US Space Foundation.

    Tempur Hybrid Mattress Alternatives

Tempur Hybrid mattresses are definitely worth considering, but to get a better idea of their standing on the market, let’s compare them to a couple of alternatives.

    Tempur vs Simba

Simba offers three hybrid models—the regular Hybrid (25cm deep), the Hybrid Pro (28cm deep), and the Hybrid Luxe (31cm deep). All of these mattresses have the typical four layers—memory foam, supportive layer, innerspring system, and base. But the Simba Hybrid Pro and Luxe models have several additional layers to increase comfort and support.

All Tempur Hybrids have removable and machine washable top covers, whereas the Simba Hybrids don’t. Both Tempur and Simba Hybrids are ideal for back and side sleepers and have similar weight limits.

What’s more, both companies offer a ten-year warranty and free delivery, but Simba has a longer trial period—200 nights compared to Tempur’s 100 nights. When it comes to pricing, Tempur Hybrids come at a higher price.

    Tempur vs Eve

The Eve mattress company also offers three different Hybrids on the market—the Original (25cm deep), the Lighter Hybrid (20cm deep), and the Premium (28cm deep).

The Premium Hybrid has five layers, and the first two have an active cooling feature. This makes the Premium model retain less heat than Tempur Hybrids.

In terms of pricing, Tempur Hybrids are significantly pricier than Eve Hybrids. Both of the companies offer a 100-night trial period and a ten-year warranty.

Bottom Line: Is This the Mattress for You?

As you can see from our review, investing in a Tempur Hybrid mattress is a big decision considering the price. The quality of the bed is beyond question. This is a high-end mattress that consists of high-quality materials like the Tempur memory foam, precision micro springs, and QuickRefresh removable cover.

One of the downsides is that these variants retain a bit more heat than we expected. Also, this isn’t the ideal mattress for very large sleepers.

If you’re willing to spend some extra money on a high-quality, luxurious mattress, then this is one of the best options on the market. You’ll get a ten-year warranty and a 100-night trial period.

    FAQ

Are Tempur mattresses worth the money?

Although they are premium-priced, Tempur mattresses are certainly worth the extra money. All models from the brand are long-lasting (~15 years) and conform to your body shape. The company’s trademark Tempur material eliminates virtually all pressure points, has an excellent motion isolation capability, and doesn’t sag.

How much is a Tempur mattress?

The cost of a Tempur mattress depends on its size and type (Supreme, Elite, or Luxe). At the time of publishing, prices range from £1,159 to £2,639.

Which Tempur mattress is best for lower back pain?

The Tempur Hybrid mattress is perfect for relieving backaches. It provides consistent back support and encourages proper spinal alignment. It also relieves shoulder, hip, and knee pains.

I'm an interior architect by education with a tendency for content writing and research. Whenever I’m waiting for the engine to finish rendering my model, I love reading and researching on a wide variety of topics. I especially love writing content that is backed up by thorough research and relevant data. Given my engineering background, I'm more for the empirical data, not the "I couldn’t help but wonder..." vibe. When I'm not busy writing or drawing, you can find me hiking with my beagle or binge-watching in my bed. There is no in-between.
