    Tempur: Brand Snapshot

In the 1970s, NASA scientists developed a material to better support astronauts during lift-off that had cushioning, pressure relief and temperature regulating properties. This is the famous Tempur mattress foam at the core of the company’s products, which after being released to the public in 1991, started gaining success worldwide and are now available in 96 countries.

The brand offers four well-developed mattresses collections:

Tempur Cloud Mattress: Material & Construction

The Tempur Cloud is available in three ranges:

    • The Supreme, which is 21cm deep, has a 5cm layer of Tempur extra soft material, a 5cm Tempur support material, and an 11cm Durabase Technology layer.
    • The Elite is 25cm deep. It has a 7cm layer of Tempur extra soft material, a 7cm layer of Tempur support material, and an 11cm Durabase Technology layer.
    • The Luxe is a 30cm-deep mattress with a 7cm Tempur extra soft material layer, a 9cm Tempur support material layer, and a 6.5cm + 7.5cm Durabase Technology layer.

Cloud mattresses have three layers. Let’s go through them top to bottom.

    • Layer 1 – The first and second layers of the Tempur Cloud are the comfort layers. The top layer is made of Tempur pressure-relieving memory foam.
    • Layer 2 – The second layer acts as a transitional one and adds even more pressure relief. It’s made of somewhat firmer Tempur memory foam.
    • Layer 3 – The two comfort layers rest on a Durabase Technology firm, supportive, and dense polyfoam, which serves as a great base.

This is fewer layers than the usual all-foam mattress since the Nectar has five, while something like the Simba Hybrid Pro boasts as many as seven.

    Tempur Cloud Mattress: Firmness

The Tempur Cloud mattress is medium firm. On the firmness scale, it’s 5/10.

In the beginning, it’ll feel firmer, but over time (after a couple of weeks or so), it’ll loosen up and become softer.

The memory foam allows you to slowly sink into it and moulds to your shape, so you might feel like you’re lying in rather than on the mattress. After you get out of bed, it’ll retake its initial shape. The Tempur Cloud lacks bounciness and doesn’t have a “springy” feel to it. This is because of the soft Tempur memory foam it’s made of.

If the temperature in the room is cooler, say 18°C or less, the mattress will feel firmer, while if it’s warmer, it’ll feel softer.

Tempur Cloud Mattress: Comfort & Support

Comfort and support depend on factors such as how you sleep and how much you weigh. Let’s check out the various sleep positions and how this mattress might suit them (or not).

    Side sleepers

The Tempur mattress is ideal if you sleep on your side since it lets the higher points of your body (shoulders and hips) sink into the memory foam while still supporting you. But, of course, the more you weigh, the firmer your mattress needs to be. Therefore, it might not be the best for heavier people (above 110kg). If you’re looking for something that can handle a bigger load, try the Sealy Posturepedic Pearl Ortho mattress or the REM-Fit 500, recommended as some of the best beds for heavier people.

    Back sleepers

Since it maintains even support and provides pressure relief, a Tempur Cloud mattress would be best for back sleepers who don’t weigh much. For heavier back sleepers, it might be uncomfortable because of the hug by the memory foam. The dream mattress for this type of customer might be the Tempur Sensation.

    Stomach sleepers

To avoid the uncomfortable misalignment of the spine while lying on their belly, stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress, like one from the Sleepeezee range. The deep sink of the Tempur mattress may be an issue since it might feel suffocating. Still, if someone weighs 60kg or less, they should have no problem with this type of bed.

The Cloud doesn’t make any noise, which isn’t very surprising, given what it’s made of.

    Tempur Cloud Mattress: Temperature Regulation

Is the Tempur mattress too hot? One of the downsides of the Tempur Cloud is that it tends to retain heat. As the body sinks into the mattress’s comfort layer, the air is restricted from freely circulating. The more heat there is, the less breathability. As a result, this isn’t the ideal mattress for hot sleepers.

However, if you’re looking for a mattress that doesn’t sleep hot, look into the Dormeo Memory Plus mattress. It’s made from breathable memory foam and has an Ecocell layer that enables air circulation and has cooling properties. The Simba Hybrid Pro is also good for hot sleepers since it also has cooling features supplied by the open-cell foam layer in the middle.

    Tempur Cloud Mattress: Motion Transfer

Tempur mattresses don’t transfer motion, which is one of the great things about them. Why is that? Memory foam only responds in the exact places where pressure is applied, and it doesn’t distribute that motion across the rest of the mattress.

Considering this, it’s a godsend to people who have trouble sleeping next to a partner who likes to “move it, move it” at all hours of the night. It’s also well-suited if you’re a light sleeper, just like the Emma or the Eve mattress.

    Tempur Cloud Mattress: Edge Support

As is true of most memory foam mattresses, the edge support isn’t satisfactory. This is because of the foam’s absorbing powers, which allow a deep sink into it. That and the lack of bounce can make the edges of this mattress feel even more unstable.

This usually isn’t a big problem for most people, but if you’re sleeping close to the perimeter of the mattress, you won’t get optimal support from the Tempur Cloud

If you’re looking for the opposite, however, you can check out Relyon mattresses. The springs inside them don’t only add support throughout the surface but along the edges, too. The side stitching reinforces them as well.

Tempur Cloud Mattress: Durability & Maintenance

The materials found in these mattresses are very durable, so you aren’t likely to experience sagginess of the foam. If maintained properly, your Tempur Cloud mattress will last up to 10 years. It might cost more, but it’s also more of a long-term investment.

For better air circulation, the mattress should be placed on a bed base with springs, slats, or a platform unit.

Since this mattress is made of memory foam, it shouldn’t be washed, wetted or dry cleaned, as it might lose some of its characteristics. However, you can easily take the fabric cover off and throw it in the washing machine at a maximum of 60°C. Additionally, the Tempur Cloud Elite and Luxe mattresses include QuickRefresh tops, which means that you can unzip the top layer you directly sleep on and wash it.

To protect it from spills, you can use a special wet-safe cover for your mattress, which can also be removed and washed. This is a leg up Tempur mattresses have over Simba, whose covers aren’t removable.

You don’t have to flip or rotate your mattress since it’ll keep its original shape throughout its lifespan. However, you can occasionally turn it head to foot if sharing a bed, just to make sure you and your partner stay equally comfortable over time.

    Tempur Cloud Mattress: Accessories

Along with your Tempur mattress, you can purchase:

    • A Tempur Mattress Protector to keep your mattress safe, fresh and dry.
    • A Tempur Mattress Topper for additional, luxurious comfort.
    • There are eight different models of Tempur Pillows for your preferred sleep position that even come with a generous 30-day trial.
    • And last but not least, there are several options when it comes to Tempur beds, from divans, ottomans, to adjustable beds that fit their mattresses perfectly.

Tempur Cloud Mattress: Warranty & Trial Period

The Tempur Cloud has a 10-year warranty. The Tempur mattress guarantee covers material defects or faulty workmanship for products purchased for personal use from the manufacturer anywhere in the world (excluding the USA and Canada) or an authorised retailer.

Tempur mattresses have a 100-night trial period, but you have to keep the mattress you’ve purchased for at least 60 nights first so you can adapt to its feel. The Tempur has a longer trial period compared to Dormeo mattresses, which you can only try out for 60 nights before deciding to return them, but a shorter one than the 200 nights Simba Sleep offers, or the full year available if you buy a Nectar mattress

If, in the end, you still want to give back your Tempur mattress, you’ll need to fill in a Return Request Form, which can be found on the official website. Returns are free only for mainland UK orders.

    Tempur Cloud Mattress: Delivery

Tempur offers free delivery for all mainland UK orders (if you live off-shore, some charges apply). Shipping usually takes about 14-28 days for all mattresses they have in stock. However, custom-made products or Tempur mattresses that come in special sizes, such as small or long doubles, can take more time to arrive. If you need a mattress promptly, you may want to order a Nectar, which will get there within days.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Tempur kindly asks its customers to inform it if they’re self-isolating or if they’ve started feeling unwell so that the delivery date can be postponed accordingly.

The Tempur Cloud is delivered to your home, and installation is included. Delivery is available Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. You can arrange for the mattress to arrive on a specific date or time, and you can find the terms in the Delivery Charges section on Tempur’s official website.

The mattress is delivered in a box, so there’s some off-gassing, which usually goes away within 4-6 weeks.

    Tempur Mattress: Customer Reviews

The company’s official UK website doesn’t contain any reviews, but let’s see what people have to say about Tempur beds and mattresses elsewhere.

On Trustpilot, it has a 3.9/5 rating out of 855 Tempur reviews. 53% of users rated Tempur as excellent, whereas 29% as bad. Some of the comments state that it’s the best mattress ever. On the other hand, there are some complaints of Tempur mattress problems related to sagging (after a couple of years), slow customer service, and late delivery.

The John Lewis website is the place to go for a detailed Tempur Mattress Cloud review and rating of each individual size and model, the overwhelming majority of which are extremely positive, in the 4-5 stars range.

In addition, Tempur is the only company allowed to use the Certified Technology Seal by NASA, so it even gets a thumbs-up from astronauts.

    Is Tempur-Cloud too soft?

The Tempur Cloud comfort layer has some sinking properties, but only to take the shape of the sleeper’s body and provide comfort. It may be considered too soft by some.
