Pros
Cons
Are you looking for a high-end mattress that ensures long-term comfort? Some people know the value of a good night’s sleep and are unwilling to make any compromises with the quality of their bed.
That’s where premium mattress models like the Tempur Original come in. This is the company that is well known for developing a pressure-relieving material for NASA astronauts. But does it deliver support and comfort for sleepers? Let’s go over what this mattress offers in our comprehensive Tempur mattress review.
Comfort | 8/10 |
Support | 8/10 |
Motion Isolation | 10/10 |
Cooling | 6/10 |
Edge Support | 5/10 |
Company Reputation | 9/10 |
Value for Money | 8/10 |
Tempur’s success is partly due to the development of a unique material for NASA back in the 70s. In 1991 the company created its first memory foam mattress with its patented Tempur® material.
Since then, the brand’s popularity has been growing, as it kept bringing comfort to sleepers worldwide. Tempur sells various kinds of mattresses and sleep accessories, all of which are manufactured in Denmark.
All Tempur mattress models are made from high-quality materials that provide a luxury feel. But they are best known for the Tempur material—high-density foam with viscous and elastic properties. There are three different depth options for the Tempur Original mattress: the Supreme (21cm), the Elite (25cm), and the Luxe (30cm). This is a pretty unique feature; most models of this class, such as the Eve Premium Hybrid, offer just one depth option.
The top layer on all mattresses is made from the Tempur material, which brings comfort, support, and pressure relief. What’s more, the cover is OEKO-TEX-certified for the British market, which means it’s free from chemicals and safe for people to use.
The second layer is made of a ‘support’ material, while the base, i.e., the bottom-most layer of the mattress, relies on what’s called Durabase Technology. The main difference between these three variants is the base’s depth, which is double in the Elite and Luxe versions.
The firmness level of the original Tempur mattress is just enough to adjust to the body’s shape and weight smoothly. Tempur categorises the Original to be more on the firmer side. But most Tempur mattress reviews online rate the firmness as more on the soft side, and we agree with them.
Since it doesn’t include a spring layer, you can expect a bit of sinkage. So for people who weigh more than 15 stone or 95kg, we suggest opting for a Tempur firm mattress.
Overall, we would rate the firmness at 5 out of 10 (10 being the firmest). But bear in mind that what may be firm to one person may be soft for the other.
Everyone wants a bed that provides both stability and relaxation by adjusting to the body’s shape while providing just enough support. Our testing team was quite impressed by what the Tempur Original mattress offers in this respect.
The experience on a Tempur memory foam mattress didn’t feel like other memory foam mattresses we’ve tested. It offers a soft feel but more stability than typical all-foam beds. But whether you like it or not will probably depend on whether you’re fond of that marshmallow-like softness in a mattress.
This Tempur foam mattress is specifically designed for pressure relief, and we can confirm from our testing that it lives up to its promise. With this bed, your body will be perfectly aligned with the surface. Plus, the back pain that some sleepers experience with their beds at home should decrease significantly.
Since the Tempur Original mattress is more on the soft side, side sleepers report this was the ideal mattress for them. On the other hand, back and stomach sleepers may be better off opting for Tempur’s firmer mattresses or a hybrid model, such as the Dormeo Wellsleep Hybrid.
Foam mattresses are known for their not-so-good temperature regulation. And to tell you the truth, this is the part where the Tempur mattress didn’t shine. Some Tempur reviews online report heat retention problems. Customer comments also share that the Tempur mattress gets too hot.
However, don’t let this dissuade you from considering this brand. If the temperature regulation still worries you, there is a model with Tempur CoolTouch technology. But keep in mind that it’s available at only one retailer in the UK.
If you wake up grumpy and restless just because your partner tossed and turned all night, then the Tempur mattress would be ideal for you. The results from our testing were impressive—this bed offers almost perfect motion isolation, so you won’t be bothered by your partner’s movements.
The dense memory foam in the mattress layers will give you almost zero motion transfer which makes it suitable for couples and light sleepers.
No matter which foam mattress you get, it still won’t give you the edge support that spring and hybrid mattresses have. Unfortunately, this is another area in which the Tempur mattress has problems.
It provides little to no edge support—you are likely to slip off while sitting on the side of the bed.
The weight limit on this mattress is 23 stone or 150kg per person, so heavyweight people might find it hard not to fall off the bed. For extra support around the perimeter, we suggest going for a hybrid model, such as the Simba Hybrid Pro.
A mattress’s longevity is crucial, especially if you consider buying a luxurious and more expensive one like Tempur. Even if you buy a cheaper mattress, you should always be mindful of durability.
Memory foam mattresses usually last anywhere from five to fifteen years. Tempur claims that its models have a lifespan of about ten years—so about average for this type of bed.
In any case, if you want to get the most out of your new mattress, you should also know how to maintain it. The Tempur mattress cover is removable and can be washed at 60°C, while the actual mattress material shouldn’t be washed.
However, we suggest that you only air and do spot cleaning with gentle products, as the cover may shrink with regular washing. Keep in mind that not all Tempur covers are washable, and make sure that you always check the label. What’s more, Tempur says you shouldn’t flip this model, as it’s one-sided.
The Tempur mattress can be used with every bed frame, except for a spring base platform. But we found that this one works best on a flat platform like a divan bed base.
Tempur comes with a variety of sleep accessories to choose from. Perhaps the most common add-on that people buy with the mattress is the Tempur classic pillow. There are also different models specifically designed for back, front and side sleepers.
Additionally, Tempur offers mattress toppers, travel sets (pillows and sleep masks), home office products including support cushions, and, last but not least, bedding and linen accessories. You can also buy a Tempur bedstead to go with your mattress.
Tempur offers a 100-night trial period. That’s basically the industry standard, although some brands, like Emma mattresses offer up to 200 nights.
What’s more, by agreeing to Tempur’s trial, you must use the mattress for at least 60 nights. If you have any problem, you can always contact the company’s customer service by email or phone.
If you want to return your Tempur mattress, the company will take back the product, refund the total amount of your purchase, and reduce the uplift fee. Returns will be free of charge if you stick to your agreed pick-up time. Otherwise, you’ll have to pay a £72 fee.
You should be aware that you can only get a trial period if you buy the mattress from the official retailer, so these terms don’t apply to outlet, clearance, or special deal mattresses.
The Tempur mattress guarantee is ten years. The warranty covers all of the physical changes and flaws. Bear in mind that changes in the material resulting from spills won’t be covered.
In addition, you should keep your receipt to prove your purchase from Tempur. That said, always check the warranty and trial policy before buying any mattress.
Delivery of Tempur mattresses in the UK is free of charge, but it takes 14–28 business days. While many companies ship their products rolled up and in a box, the Tempur mattress is delivered flat.
The delivery people from Tempur will set up your bed, and there’s no need to sit and wait for the mattress to expand. If you want your old one removed by Tempur’s service, you must order a mattress with a minimum width of 140cm. The removal option can be selected while you are making your purchase.
Off-gassing can be an issue with memory foam mattresses. Even though many Tempur mattress reviews from the UK state that they experienced off-gassing, it usually goes away within a few days.
Since Tempur manufactures luxury products, it’s fair to say that its line of mattresses belongs to the high-end market. Most other brands offer cheaper luxury models, while Tempur’s range is comparable to that of the premium-priced iGel mattresses.

It’s worth noting that the company offers what it calls the Tempur sleep system. This is essentially a package you can add to your purchase, which includes a pillow, a mattress protector, and a quilt. These are designed to increase support, comfort, breathability and improve humidity and temperature regulation.
Aside from buying Tempur mattresses on the official website, you can also purchase Tempur online from John Lewis and Argos. What’s more, Tempur has an outlet department where the prices are lower. Also, be on the lookout for Tempur mattress deals and coupon codes.
As for payment methods, the company accepts credit and debit cards, PayPal, and interest-free financing on orders over £1,000.
One review wouldn’t be enough for you to get a good idea about a specific mattress. So here are some ratings from customer reviews on Trustpilot, Argos, and John Lewis:
Interestingly, Tempur is the only mattress company that has been certified by the International Space Foundation and NASA.
We compared the Tempur mattress with Simba and Emma, and here’s how they stack up against each other:
The Tempur Original is a three-layer foam mattress, while the Simba one is a hybrid with four layers. The Tempur model offers three depths for every size, whereas Simba’s only depth is 25cm.
Both mattresses are suitable for side sleepers. Still, the Simba one is firmer and offers more edge support although the weight limit is 114kg per person. As for the price, Simba is cheaper than Tempur, with a price range of £609–£1,039.
Both companies make foam mattresses with three layers. Emma is among the first to deliver a boxed mattress. But to Tempur’s advantage, it has a free service that will set up your bed.
What’s more, light sleepers may feel the movements of their partner on the Emma mattress, while Tempur ensures minimal motion transfer.
On the other hand, Tempur offers a 100-night trial, while Emma customers have up to 200 nights to decide if the model is for them. In addition, the Emma mattress is cheaper with a price range of £449–£899.
If you want a deluxe bed with free shipping, no motion transfer, and high-quality materials, then the Tempur Original mattress may be the right product for you.
We hope you found our comprehensive Tempur mattress review. If you’re still unsure if this model is the best fit for you, you may want to take advantage of the 100-night trial and give this bed a try.
Tempur mattresses offer excellent support, comfort, and pressure relief, especially if you’re a side sleeper who likes a softer mattress.
Tempur puts in lots of effort to bring the best to its customers, using high-quality materials and designs that come at a heftier price tag.
The Tempur Original mattress price ranges from £1,159–£3,199.
Tempur estimates that with its high-quality material, the mattress would last at least ten years.
I'm an interior architect by education with a tendency for content writing and research. Whenever I’m waiting for the engine to finish rendering my model, I love reading and researching on a wide variety of topics. I especially love writing content that is backed up by thorough research and relevant data. Given my engineering background, I'm more for the empirical data, not the "I couldn’t help but wonder..." vibe. When I'm not busy writing or drawing, you can find me hiking with my beagle or binge-watching in my bed. There is no in-between.
